Distribution:
Mainly western, the present known distribution extends from Crosby (SD3001)
east to Wayoh (SD7216) and north to near Ribchester (SD6334).
Habitat:
A feature of woods on sandy soils where it is sometimes locally abundant as
at Mere Sands Wood (SD4515).
Taxon Designation:
Endemic to the British Isles; South Lancashire Axiophyte.
Comments:
There are numerous historic specimens in herbaria. Surprisingly absent from
the hill districts of the east of the vice-county, it appears that the West
Pennine and Rossendale Moors may have acted as a barrier to the northward migration
of this species.
