Distribution:
A localised species of the hill districts, most frequent about the western flanks
of Winter Hill with scattered populations across to the Burnley area and to
the north of Rochdale; rare elsewhere with a small population along lanes near
Ormskirk.
Habitat:
Woodland borders and glades, hedgerows, roadsides, parkland and scrub within
pastures.
Taxon Designation:
Endemic; South Lancashire Axiophyte.
Comments:
Considered endemic to the British Isles reaching a southern limit in South Lancashire.
The earliest record traced is from Rivington (SD61, T Midgley, 1904, BON, det.
DP Earl & A Newton).
