Distribution:
A feature of the south-east of the vice-county especially along the river valleys
of Greater Manchester. Populations are generally very scattered to the west
but with an outlier population in the Chorley woodlands; the populations found
along the banks of the old railway at Preston Junction and in central Preston
(vc60) represent the northern limit of the species in mainland Britain.
Habitat:
Field scrub, woodlands, hedgerows and railway banks.
Taxon Designation:
Endemic; South Lancashire Axiophyte.
Comments:
Endemic to the British Isles with the main population being in the north Midlands
and north-west England. An outlier population was recently discovered in Ireland.
