Rubus
'The Duxbury Bramble'
This map has been generated using a programme created by
John Lowell for the South Lancashire 'snapshot flora' 1995-2005.
A revised map needs to be created to show the additional records made since
2005.
Distribution:
This plant grows in abundance in the woodlands between Wigan and Bamber Bridge
particularly along the well-wooded sections of the Yarrow and Douglas valleys.
An outlier population occurs to the west at Pool Hey Covert, Scarisbrick (SD3614,
DP Earl, 1997, BM).
Habitat:
Woods and woodland borders, occasional in hedgerows.
Taxon Designation:
Regional Endemic; South Lancashire Axiophyte.
Comments:
Features of this distinctive bramble include the long narrow bright pink petals,
often with red styles and the rhomboidal to obovate terminal leaflets. A distant
outlier to the east occurs in vice-county 64 at Big Wood, Barnoldswick (SD8548,
DP Earl & J Earl, 1999, Herb DP Earl). This regional endemic, as far as
is known, only occurs within Lancashire and Greater Manchester.
