This map has been generated by Mapmate 17/12/2011
Distribution:
Croxteth Park (SJ4094, I Craven, 2001); glasshouse weed, The Firs Experimental
Grounds, Fallowfield (SJ8594, AR Locksley, 2006).
Former Distribution:
Croxteth Park (SJ49C, Anon, 1850, Herb C Bailey, MANCH); Queen’s Park,
Bolton (SD70E, T Midgeley, 1903); glasshouse weed in the Rochdale area (SD91,
Shaw 1971); abundant in a glasshouse, Hesketh Park (SD3418, DP Earl & J
Earl, 1995).
Habitat:
Usually in heated glasshouses, in a moist environment, note however, that plants
are established in a churchyard border at Thurstaston, Wirral, Cheshire.
Comments:
Neophyte. This thermophilous species is native to the Azores and tropical southern
Africa. Plants were lost from the Hesketh Park location following the subsequent
refurbishment of the glasshouse. The recent record for Croxteth Park is cited
as being from formal gardens and it is interesting to note that plants may have
persisted at this location for over 150 years.
