Fallopia japonica var. compactum
This dwarf variety of Japanese Knotweed is rarely
naturalised in the British Isles. A small population was found on an embankent
in Miller Street car park off Rochdale Road in the City Centre of Manchester
by Dave Earl in 2001. The car park is just east of the CIS building which is
close to Victoria Station. A specimen was collected by Dave Earl and the photographs
of this plant were taken by Dr. Peta Hayes at Manchester Museum.
As well as being a smaller plant than this variety also has a notable pink tinge
to the flower inflorescences.
The only other South Lancashire sites that have been traced for this variety
are:
Heaton Mersey (SJ8690) Barbara Porter and the late Audrey Franks 1995.
Darcy Lever (SD737083) AC Howell and Ann Connolly 1975.
Plants should be looked for at the Darcy Lever locality.
