This website is being developed in order to assist in the promotion of the South Lancashire Flora publication. The website will also further supplement the South Lancashire Flora publication by displaying photographs of plants recorded from South Lancashire. As the website develops further tips on plant identification will also be added.
A brief supply of the South Lancashire Flora Project is presented below:
The project was launched by the North Western Naturalists’ Union in 1995 and involved the collecting of data for Vascular Plants, Charaphytes, Bryophytes, Lichens, Fungi and Marine Algae. Recording for the project finished at the end of 2005. The results will be presented as a publication in the relatively near future.
Vascular
Plants and Bryophytes:
Recording was carried out at the tetrad level (2km
x 2km). Distribution maps will supplement the species accounts where six or
more records were made between 1995 and 2005.
Lichens:
Recording was carried out at the pentad level (5km
x 5km). Distribution maps will supplement the species accounts where six or
more records were made between 1995 and 2005.
(Charaphytes and Fungi: Species accounts will be presented).
In additional chapters will be compiled on Habitats, Biogeography, Geology, the History of Botany in the vice-county and the on Herbarium collections.
Note that the South Lancashire Flora will be essential reading
for naturalists with an interest in the plant geography of Lancashire, Merseyside,
Greater Manchester and Warrington. The distribution maps and species accounts
will generally be restricted to the publication although a few samples will
be presented on the website.
