A common species of the mosslands on peaty soils often amongst Molinia caerulea (Purple Moor-grass). Also recorded from cloughs and relic heaths where associated with Calluna vulgaris (Heather) and Vaccinium myrtillus (Bilberry). Plants still occur at Kersal Moor were collected as early as 1840 by Joseph Sidebotham (MANCH).

This species was recorded as Rubus suberectus in Wood's Flora Mancuniensis of 1840.
