Occasional. A species of woodland banks and grassland slopes on acid soils. Hard-fern is most luxuriant in the Irwell Valley at Clifton where associated with Calluna vulgaris and Vaccinium myrtillus. The record from SJ7293 is from the embankment of the Manchester Ship Canal at Flixton, Trafford (Manchester Field Club, 2005).
