Once plentiful in a meadow belonging to Agecroft Farm, some three quarters of
a mile from Agecroft Bridge (Buxton 1849 & Grindon 1859).
In recent times Crocus varieties thought to be derived from this species
have been extensively planted in the turf of roundabouts, mown verges, lawns and
churchyards. Plants also frequently occur as garden escapes.
Most of the ‘Spring Crocus’ records are for purple-flowered forms
but a white-flowered form has been record from Eccles (SJ7798) and might be extensively
planted.
