Widely planted in suburban parks, cemeteries and along the banks of River Irwell. Recorded from hedges in Lower Broughton, near the river and plentiful about Worsley (Buxton 1849). Black Poplar trees can be recognised by the dark trunks with numerous bosses and the branches which arch downwards.
